3D scanning and 3D printing technology to create a world of traditional Chinese mythology IP

In the past and present, the US has cultures such as Marvel, DC and Disney

have been recognized by the world

In the future, Chinese culture, which has been passed down for thousands of years, will surely blossom again in the world

–Lu Renjie

Lu Renjie, China, independent artist

He specialises in oil painting, ceramics, sculpture, installation and other forms of artistic expression. His masterpiece “Lu Renjie’s World of Shanhaijing” is a complete series of Shanhaijing ceramic sandboxes, including Shanhaijing characters, divine animals, plants, geography, etc. The masterpiece “Chinese Dragon” is the only painting-within-a-painting masterpiece that contains 1800 non-traditional cultures today.

Cultural genetics: breaking the circle of transmission

As a traditional Chinese book of spirituality and monsters, the Shanhaijing is an all-encompassing, chaotic world of light and wonder. In addition to preserving a wealth of mythological material, it also covers such academic fields as philosophy, aesthetics, religion, history, geography, astronomy, meteorology, medicine, flora and fauna, minerals, folklore, ethnography, geology, oceanography, psychology, anthropology and so on, which can be described as vast and vast, like a sea of sunshine.

With the mountains and the sea, the world is entering the world and promoting the awakening of tradition. In the contemporary era of technology and art, Mr Lu Renjie draws inspiration from primitive cults, myths and legends, and ancient texts with a history of over a thousand years, and through artistic expressions such as painting and sculpture, he combines 3D scanning and 3D printing technology to create a series of cultural IP masterpieces from the Shanhaijing.

Sangai – Shanhaijing Series Original Styling

Through 809 miniature sculptures, 340 square metres of sandboxes of the world of mountains and seas, a 100-metre map of mountains and seas, an immersive light and shadow interactive space, AR immersive play, a novice village (an aesthetic education base for university students and an extra-curricular practice base), a musical stage, a creation workshop, handicrafts, jewellery, furniture, utensils, clothing and other diverse forms of content, a systematic world of the Shanhaijing is reconstructed, giving the public an immersive Chinese fantasy cosmic world The experience is an immersion into the world of Chinese fantasy universe, and the traditional Chinese cultural genes are conveyed in a broken circle.

Technological intelligence protects the heart of the artisan

As clay sculptures are not easy to preserve for a long time, in order to ensure a better exhibition effect, Mr Lu Renjie chose to collaborate with Siwei Technology and Youlian Wisdom, using 3D scanning and 3D printing technology to successfully break through the traditional processing process and complete the production of 809 exquisite miniature sculptures.

Let’s take a look at this 3D art smart-making journey!

Firstly, the designers 3D scanned the handmade clay sculptures of the Shan Hai Jing through Siwei Technology’s KSCAN-Magic composite 3D scanner to generate a 1:1 high precision 3D model.

The prints were then printed through the industrial-grade SLA 3D printer of UCLI. The prints were then post-treated and painted and coloured in a process that took one month to complete the production of all the exhibits in the Shanhaijing series.

The miniature sculptures made through 3D printing efficiently and exquisitely recreate the form of handcrafted art, ensuring the perfect presentation of the fantastical universe of Shanhaijing.

3D printed finished products

In addition to this, based on 809 sculpture templates, the 3D scanning technology allows the designer to optimise the 3D data of the handmade work for redesign.

The 3D data can be used for multi-process manufacturing (e.g. 3D printing, engraving, CNC, etc.), and then the corresponding process can be selected to produce derivative works of different sizes according to the needs of different scenes, providing support for the output of multiple business scenarios for the creation of the Shanhaijing IP.

The 3D data collected by the 3D scanning can also be used as a digital archive of the sculptures for data storage and backup.

The 3D data can be used to restore the masterpiece 1:1, creating unlimited possibilities for the public to “travel” through the magnificent world of Shanhaijing.

The rise of the national trend, together for the future

In the past, Hollywood identified the Chinese mythological IP as the Monkey King, but in recent years, with the rise of the national trend, creators have been scrambling to tap into traditional cultural elements in their content creation, setting off a national trend.

After Journey to the West and Gods and Monsters, the Shan Hai Jing is becoming a treasure trove of IPs in the Chinese language world, and as the grandfather of the “weird and wonderful” world, the Chinese fantasy universe of the Shan Hai Jing is being reborn with a unique branding of the times. Huawei, for example, has registered the entire Shanhaijing in its trademark, positioning itself as a national brand and using technology to portray the ancient gods, with names such as Qilin, Kunpeng and Xiezhi, and other “ancient gods and beasts”. The Hollywood blockbuster “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” also includes the image of the divine beast Zouwu from the “Shanhaijing” ……

This time, SiWatch Technology, together with U联智造, jointly helped independent artist Mr. Lu Renjie to recreate the “Shan Hai Jing” through 3D scanning & 3D printing technology, which is a discussion on the new direction of 3D scanning, 3D printing and other cutting-edge technologies in future cultural practices.

Based on its own technical advantages, SiWatch Technology has been exploring tirelessly on the road of 3D digitization of everything. Examples of using 3D scanning technology to remember history and inherit cultural treasures have been seen time and again. 3D scanning technology is also featured in the 3D digital exhibition project of ethnic culture in the Saihan District of Hohhot, where the digital exhibition format is innovative and bright, creating a new way for the public to review history.

3D digital exhibition where history comes to life

3D technology is deeply integrated with art to produce 3D miniature landscapes through 3D scanning, and the efficiency of portrait modelling is multiplied with realistic models, providing important 3D data support for the eventual restoration of Su Dongpo’s governance of the West Lake scene.

At the invitation of the Taoyuan Art Museum in Changde, Hunan Province, Siwei Technology digitised its treasures, which have a root age of over 1,300 years, in 3D, and then produced derivative peripherals through 3D printing, allowing the craftsmanship to be more widely disseminated.

Cultural heritage contains the spiritual values of the nation and is a treasure of civilisation for all mankind. It is the responsibility of every child of Yanhuang to protect cultural heritage and pass on the culture of the nation.

As technology and culture intermingle, we will continue to explore new ways to pass on and protect culture.

New digital technologies such as the Internet, 3D digitisation, 3D printing, AR and VR are increasingly being introduced into the protection and transmission of cultural heritage, so that cultural heritage can be brought to life in the present and into the future.
